PART OF AUSTRALIA'S HISTORY
Vegemite Yeast Extract is part of Australia's social history. It was invented in 1923 by the nation's leading food technologist of the 1920s and 1930s, Dr C.P. Callister.

By blending brewery yeasts, he developed Vegemite Yeast Extract, a food that was to become part of the Australian ethos. It was so rich in B complex vitamins it was used by those in the armed services and in hospitals during the Second World War.

Over the years, Vegemite Yeast Extract has become a favourite food with generations of Australians. In fact, it has become a unique and loved symbol of our nation. The time honoured formula of Vegemite Yeast Extract is as popular as ever. It is a great Aussie product.

HOW NUTRITIOUS IS VEGEMITE YEAST EXTRACT?
Australians love Vegemite Yeast Extract ... And this strange-looking black spread has provided generations of Australians with an excellent array of the B complex vitamins. The yeast from which Vegemite Extract is made is one of the richest known sources of many of the B complex vitamins, especially thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and folacin. The vitamins are retained in the concentrated yeast extract. A thin spread of Vegemite Yeast Extract (the amount on a single slice of bread) will supply the following percentages of daily vitamin needs:

7-year-old
  • thiamin: 64%
  • niacin: 32%
  • riboflavin: 51%
  • folate: 66%

Adult
  • thiamin: 42%
  • niacin: 24%
  • riboflavin: 40%
  • folate: 33%
The vitamins of the B complex are essential in the body's use of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Few other foods (apart from yeast itself) can match such a contribution to the diet. When we consider how many foods available contain negligible quantities of vitamins (such as sugar and alcoholic drinks), Vegemite Yeast Extract stands out even further. There is no doubt that it is a nutritious product.

USING VEGEMITE
Vegemite has a strong flavor similar to Soy Sauce. It needs to be used sparingly... spread it thinly onto buttered bread or crackers. It can be used as a flavoring for soups, stews, casseroles and gravy. It makes a great drink on a winters day... a small teaspoon in a cup of hot water.

Sandwich ideas: cream cheese and vegemite; cheese and vegemite; lettuce and vegemite; tomato and vegemite; avocado and vegemite; fresh mint leaves and vegemite.

Try a combination of some of the above, in particular, avocado, mint and vegemite.
